Abstract
The ability of magnetic resonance imagine (MRI) to detect very small acoustic tumors has triggered many to rethink the use of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in the screening of vestibular schwannoms. To assess ABR accuracy, we conducted a
retrospective study of 85 biposy-proven vestibular schwannoma patients. Of these patients, 55 had ABR test and over sensitivity of ABR is 98%. There are two patients whose tumor size is smaller than 1.0 cm. Both of these patients had abnormal
results of
ABR. The universl use of MRI as the screening test of vestibular schwannomas is restricted by several factors such as cost and availability. With stict adherence to optimal technique and evaluation criteria, the ABR remains a valuable option for
vestibular schwannomas screening.
